Shenzhen in November is breezy and refreshing. The 22nd China Hi-Tech Fair ( CHTF ) was held on schedule. Over the past 22 years, the CHTF has witnessed and driven the growth and take-off of this "city of innovation". In 2019, the output of Shenzhen ’ s hi-tech reached 2.6 trillion yuan, taking up over 34% of this city ’ s GDP. Now, in Shenzhen, there are more than 30,000 science and technology enterprises, and the total number of national-level hi-tech enterprises exceeds 17,000, only second to Beijing among China ’ s large and medium-sized cities. Behind these outstanding achievements are the "innovation code" of Shenzhen ’ s high-quality growth.

Over Half of Shenzhen ’ s National-Level Hi-tech Enterprises are in Bao ’ an and Nanshan

Currently, the number of national-level hi-tech enterprises in Bao ’ an District and Nanshan District stands at 4,969 and 3,778 respectively, taking up over 50% of the total number of national-level hi-tech enterprises in Shenzhen.

Data show that electronic information technology, advanced manufacturing and automation industries accounted for 53% and 29% of the total national-level hi-tech enterprises in Bao ’ an District. As China ’ s leading science and technology zone, 64% of national-level hi-tech enterprises in Nanshan District concentrate their efforts on the field of electronic information technology, and a batch of aircraft carrier-like innovative companies such as Huawei, ZET and Tencent are among them.

Likewise, electronic information enterprises are in the majority of national-level hi-tech enterprises in Futian, Luohu, Longhua and Longgang, as they take up over 45% of the total. Meanwhile, in eastern Shenzhen, Dapeng New District, Yantian and Pingshan have formed a cluster of biological and new medicine research. In the Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone, the advanced manufacturing automation and new technology industries go halves.

The Electronic Information Technology Industry Takes Up 50% of National-Level Hi-tech Enterprises in Shenzhen

After 40 years of growth of Shenzhen, the hi-tech industrial clusters spearheaded by the electronic information technology industry have formed a favorable industrial ecology. Among 17,000 national-level hi-tech enterprises, 9,968 of them are in the electronic information technology industry, accounting for over 50% of the total.

According to 2020 Shenzhen Government Work Report, in 2019, the value added of the advanced manufacturing industry in Shenzhen took up over 70% of the total value added of industries above scale. Among Shenzhen state-level hi-tech enterprises, the proportion of advanced manufacturing and automation industries has exceeded 20%.

Private Enterprises Are Strong Impetus and Main Force of Scientific and Technological Innovation of Shenzhen

Among 17,000 national-level hi-tech enterprises in Shenzhen, less than 7% are funded by Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreign countries. As of May 2019, there were a total of 1.953 million private enterprises in Shenzhen, taking up 96.3% of the total number of enterprises in this city. Besides, private enterprises in Shenzhen have always maintained an obvious leading position in R&D input, transformation of innovative achievements and other aspects.

Names of National-Level Hi-tech Enterprises in Shenzhen Highlight Patriotism

Data show that among the names of 17,000 national-level hi-tech enterprises in Shenzhen, " ( 达 ) Da", " ( 华 ) Hua", " ( 科 ) Ke", " ( 创 ) Chuang" are the most frequent. Behind these names are their founders ’ philanthropic patriotism and firm determination to innovate.

In Shenzhen, 17,000 national-level hi-tech enterprises have formed a positive landscape where "big enterprises are mainstays while small- and medium-sized enterprises mushroom". Besides traditional competitive industries, emerging industries including 5G, artificial intelligence and biomedicine are planned proactively, to help Shenzhen build the "Comprehensive National Science Center" and the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area International Science and Technology Innovation Center".
