Ivy Foster, 3, and Keeva Hollow, 8, have been in hospital fighting bacterial infections after swimming and swallowing water in the sea and falling ill with high fevers

Two children are desperately ill in hospital after swimming in a harbour branded a "toilet bowl".

Ivy Foster, 3, fell ill with E.coli poisoning after paddleboarding in Christchurch Harbour in Bournemouth, Dorset with her mum. Ivy has since endured two spells in hospital as the infection was resistant to several different antibiotics.

She has suffered from vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and a temperature spiking at 39.2C - well beyond the 36C and 37.5C range considered healthy for children. At one stage her family feared she was going to die.

Thankfully, doctors discovered a course of antibiotics that appears to be fighting the infection and she has since been discharged from hospital. Meanwhile, Keeva Hollow, 8, was hospitalised with the bacterial infection campylobacter after swimming off Avon Beach, which is close to the entrance to the harbour.

She swallowed some water when she was hit by a wave and within 24 hours was ill with a high temperature and diarrhoea. She was later rushed to A&E and she was placed on an IV drip as she lost a lot of weight.

She has not yet fully recovered a month later. The parents of both children have now released shocking photographs of them in hospital to highlight ongoing pollution concerns with Christchurch Harbour.

The harbour has been described as the "toilet bowl of Bournemouth" as two rivers - Stour and Avon - drain into it. The River Stour runs around the back of heavily populated Bournemouth and Christchurch, passing agricultural land with cattle, building sites and sewage treatment plants.

Last week, volunteers who regularly test Christchurch Harbour for pollution revealed they had recorded massive levels of E.coli in the water. Ivy's mother Kimberley said she is disgusted at the state of the harbour.

She said: "We were at Mudeford Quay paddleboarding and when the tide went down we noticed this horrendous smell and we got out of the water, it was disgusting. We went home and a few days later Ivy became really poorly.

"The doctor said she probably caught this because of the water. They tried courses of the antibiotics celalexan, co-Amoxiclav and Trimethopim Amoxicillin but the E-coli was resistant to all of them."

Ivy was discharged following a short stay in Poole Hospital but was re-admitted on August 21 after her condition deteriorated. Her second spell lasted four days, during which she was put on an IV drip and given another course of antibiotics.

With the doctors confident the antibiotics were working this time, she was discharged on August 25 and has been monitored since then. Her mum, Kimberley Foster, a 34-year-old hairdresser, said: "Before her second admission to hospital she really went down hill.

"She had abdominal pain, sickness, a temperature of 39.2C and diarrhoea. She couldn't hold anything down so they put her on an IV drip and gave her fluids.

"It was a scary, horrendous time and I thought she was going to die. The doctors are confident that this latest course of very strong antibiotics seems to be working, and Ivy is finally coming back to her lovely self.

"I'm disgusted because I live in Mudeford and the beach is normally our first port of call as a family. But after this I'm not taking my children there any more and I would tell people to stay out of the water."

Aisling McCarthy, mum of 8-year-old Keeva Hollow, said she was disgusted by the response from authorities after her daughter was hospitalised. Teacher McCarthy said she was certain Keeva picked up campylobacter after swallowing seawater while swimming between Avon Beach and Friars Cliff in Mudefort, in Dorset.

She went swimming on August 3 and was hospitalised on August 7 after becoming very ill with a high temperature and diarrhoea. Ms McCarthy, 46, said: "A wave hit her and she ingested quite a lot of water, she came out complaining but we went for ice cream and I didn't think any more of it at the time.

"Two days later and she was droopy, lethargic and didn't want to eat or leave her bed. Her temperature started going up and Calpol wasn't helping. I thought it was a tummy bug at first. She wasn't really waking up so we took her to an out of hours doctor and they found blood in her stool."

She continued: "The hospital found campylobacter, which can be caused from water pollution or food contamination. Chicken is a common cause but Keeva's not really a meat eater and we eat as a family so I can't see how she could've eaten something when the rest of us didn't get sick.

"I did really suspect it was the water so I contacted the council, Environment Agency and Wessex Water. I just got sent back generic right of reply emails from the Environment Agency and Wessex Water, they didn't ask any questions, I didn't feel they were taking it seriously.

"I feel like it was totally ignored that there was a chance she could've gotten sick from swimming. It needs to be investigated properly. How Wessex Water can say Avon Beach has excellent water quality - I want to know when that was last tested, because it should be tested every day in high season."

An Environment Agency spokesperson said: Our officers sampling showed E. coli levels to be within the range we would expect to see in Christchurch Harbour.

We have thoroughly checked water company discharges and investigated other potential sources of pollution linked to the elevated E. coli readings and are yet to identify a source. Bacterial levels in natural waters can vary significantly due to factors such as weather , tides water conditions and time of day.

"The harbour is also subject to a large range of bacteria sources including birds, urban run-off, agriculture and private treatment systems."

A Wessex Water spokesperson said: Last months reported high E.Coli readings in the Stour did not relate to Wessex Water or its assets.

Christchurch Harbour is a catchment serving a largely rural area where water quality can be influenced by wildlife, agricultural run-off, private sewage sources and numerous other factors.

Environment Agency data does not identify discharges from water industry assets as the reason for the harbour not achieving a higher ecological status.
